As set forth in “The Regulation on Nuclear and Radioactive Installations” (R.D. 1836/1999 and its modification R.D. 35/2008), to approve the type of a radioactive device that incorporates radioactive substances or generates ionizing radiation, with a view to its exemption as a radioactive facility, one of the following conditions to be fulfilled is to provide, in the request for type approval, accrediting documentation showing the results obtained in the tests verified with the prototype, with respect to the radiation protection conditions.
The tests that SCI’s UTPR performs on prototypes consist mainly of:
- Measurement of radiation levels: under normal operating conditions, the apparatus shall not present a dose rate higher than 1 µSv/h at any point within 0.1 m of the accessible surface of the apparatus.
- Checking the operation of the safety systems.
- Checking of signaling.
