    WHAT IS INDUSTRIAL RADIOGRAPHY?

    Industrial radiography is a non-destructive test that consists of passing through the component to be tested with a beam of ionizing electromagnetic radiation (gamma rays or X-rays).

    This radiation will be more or less absorbed by the internal discontinuities of the piece, reaching the other side of it, with a different radiation intensity, and impressing a radiographic film, which, once developed, shows the location of these discontinuities.

    Among the Industrial Radiography techniques performed at SCI we highlight the following:

    CONVENTIONAL RADIOGRAPHY

    SCI has the following equipment for industrial radiography:

    • Portable gammagraphy equipment with Ir192, Se75 sources.
    • Fixed gammagraphy equipment for use in bunkers with Co60 sources.
    • Portable X-ray equipment up to 360 kV for use in bunkers and construction sites.
    • Constant potential X-Ray equipment up to 450 Kv for use in bunkers.

    In most of its branches, SCI has bunkers for radiography. There is also the possibility of installing modular bunkers at the customer’s facilities.

    LINEAR ACCELERATOR RADIOGRAPHY

    Since the end of 2009, SCI has a linear accelerator at its facilities at Beasain (Guipúzcoa), exclusively for the radiographic inspection of large components, being the first Spanish company specialized in inspection services that offers its clients the possibility of radiographing steel thicknesses up to 300 mm thick. For this purpose, it has a 6 MeV linear accelerator for use in bunkers.

    The use of the linear accelerator has allowed SCI to make itself known in our neighboring countries, where there is a growing demand in the metallurgical sector for applications of this type.

    OTHER INDUSTRIAL RADIOGRAPHY SERVICES

    Digital radiography is an alternative to conventional radiography in which the film is replaced by an acquisition system whose reading provides a digitized radiographic image.

    Digital radiography has important advantages over conventional radiography, among which we could highlight:

    There are two radiographic image acquisition systems:

    • Direct image capture (DR) panels. With this system, an electronic imager directly acquires the radiographic image and displays it on a computer screen.
    • Digital Scanner and Digital Film (CR). This system uses flexible media capable of capturing a digital image and is used in a similar way to conventional film. These flexible supports are processed in a digital scanner that displays the radiographic image on a computer screen.

    SCI has both DR and CR systems, being able to offer the best service and advice according to customer needs.

    The fields of application of digital radiography are essentially the same as those of conventional radiography, although the use of specific software for image analysis allows new applications of this test method. Among these new applications we can highlight:

    • Thickness measurement of calorifuged pipe.
    • Measurement of porosity areas in components.
    • Thickness measurement of components.

    As a complement to digital radiography, the Digitization of Conventional Radiographs service represents an innovation in the preservation of radiographic records (films), solving the problems of archiving them.

    The digitization of radiographic plates is performed with very high resolution scanners, which allows the resolution and quality of the digitized images to be similar to those of the conventional radiographic plate.

    The digital images obtained can be treated in a similar way to conventional radiographic plates.

    Since Crawler type equipment for Automated Radiographic Inspection of Gas and Oil Pipelines started to be used in Spain, pipeline inspection has been greatly optimized. This equipment makes it possible to examine a large number of welds in less time and with higher quality.

    SCIdesigns and manufactures its own Crawler equipment, suitable for diameters from 3″ to 60″, which has allowed SCI to position itself as a leader in Spain in the market for the inspection of oil and gas pipelines during their construction. This has served as a springboard to expand abroad through this activity.
